Paul Ryan: OK With Gay Couples Adopting

By    |   Tuesday, 30 April 2013 08:30 PM EDT

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., voted against allowing same-sex couples to adopt in 1999. But he told a town hall audience Monday he feels differently now.

During a question-and-answer time at the meeting one audience member peppered Ryan with questions about his voting record on gay-rights issues, ThinkProgress reports.

“I’d vote differently these days,” Ryan said, noting that the previous vote was cast during his first term. “I do believe that if there are children who are orphans who do not have a loving person or couple -- I think if a person wants to love and raise a child they ought to be able to do that. Period.”

But Ryan said he hasn’t changed his opinion on same-sex marriage. He still opposes it, though he favors allowing domestic partnerships that allow couples to have the same legal rights as married couples.

The questioner continued to press Ryan on why he didn’t believe in “marriage equality” for gay and lesbian couples.

Ryan responded, “ I do believe marriage is between a man and a woman, we just respectfully disagree on that issue.”
